MORE THAN A STRETCH: THE YOGA ADVANTAGE FOR FOOTBALLERS
Most players understand the benefits of extra training.
However, few see the results from doing extra work away from the field.
Why?
Because they are always looking for the next “big thing.”
The best players understand that the most important thing is consistency.
First, identify your strengths and weaknesses. Then, choose an extra training regime to help improve your weaknesses, and stick to it for at LEAST 6 weeks.
Today, we dive deep into something that elite players do that most young players do not understand the benefits of.
This training is called Yoga.
Sure, you might have heard of it before, but today, we will share exactly what the benefits are, why it works, and how you can get started.
PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF YOGA
Yoga's benefits extend beyond physical flexibility. By engaging muscles through weight-bearing and balancing poses, yoga enhances both strength and muscle tone. Moreover, its ability to challenge the core and peripheral nervous system improves balance and stability.
MENTAL BENEFITS OF YOGA
Yoga offers a comprehensive approach to mental well-being. The mind-body practices, such as meditation and deep breathing, activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping with relaxation and stress reduction. Added to this, yoga triggers the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which contribute to an elevated mood and a more positive outlook. Moreover, the mindfulness techniques embedded in yoga enhance concentration and attention span, while regular practice has been linked to decreasing anxiety symptoms.
BUT WHAT DOES SCIENCE SAY?
In a 2020 study of 26 footballers playing in the top flight of Turkish football, the players were exposed to yoga workouts for six weeks, and the results were staggering. The only measurement which did not change over the time frame was the weight of the players. The players improved in arm strength, balance, and flexibility and also saw a decrease in overall body fat %. The most important factor to their gain was that they remained CONSISTENT for six weeks!
Yoga is more than just a physical practice; it's a holistic approach to peak performance. By incorporating yoga into your training routine, you can enhance your flexibility, improve your balance and stability, and develop a stronger mental focus. Not sure where to start with yoga?
